On Monday we welcomed Toby from the North London Waste Authority to our longest running Get Together at The Duke of Cambridge to speak about how to waste less food and save more money as part of the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign.

It was another brilliant talk, really opening our eyes to the facts and figures around food waste – such as 37 million slices of bread being thrown away by UK households every day!

We guessed at best portion sizes, using the helpful measuring cups and spaghetti measurers Toby provided, as well as sharing our own advise on how to store fresh food and tell when something is going off.

It was a great afternoon, and we all learnt something new!

Thank you Toby!

Join us at more interesting talks, or just pop in for a cuppa and a chat! We meet at The Duke of Cambridge pub, 33 St Peters St, Angel, every Monday (except Bank Hols) from 12 – 2pm.

Call Activities Manager Ellie Shipman for more information on 0207 281 6018.

See you there!

Our regular lunch every Wednesday has been taken on by fantastic food entrepreneurs Kitchenette (Cynthia, Louise and more!) with Joel and Eddie from thegoodegg.

Today was our first lunch, which went down an absolute treat! We were given chicken schnizel with aubergine, sweet potatoe mash and fresh tomato sauce for our main with an apple crumble and a good dollop of custard for pudding. Plates were practically licked clean and every one of our clients will be back for more next week!

We were also treated to a lovely poetry reading from one of our clients, Janette who had written a new one especially for the lunch as it was her first time!

Looking forward to next week already – thank you Kitchenette and thegoodegg!

During my time volunteering with Age UK, I have been continually surprised and very touched at the great level of warmth both the participants and organisers have to give.

It has been a lovely experience to build relationships with those attending different sessions, and as there is such a range of activities to assist with there is almost certainly something which any potential volunteer would enjoy.

Having switched sessions from an arts based activity (my work background) to a more leisure/sport based activity, I had expected that there would be aspects in the new role I didn’t enjoy quite as much. It proved to be the opposite, and the new session I feel is both an interesting change from my normal area of interest and one which can help inform other activities I may help out with.

Maggie has been volunteering with us for 6 months now hosting a free table tennis Get Together at Sobell Leisure Centre. Come and join her and the team!

We had a most enjoyable afternoon on the Angel Boat trip last Friday! The people were very nice, and we all had a really great time.

Thank you Angel Boats!

We have more trips confirmed for September – just give us a call to book your place: 0207 281 6018.
