We have been lucky enough to be granted another series of trips out on the Angel Boats this September. All aboard for more fun on the waterways – see London from a very different angle, meet new people and learn about the boat from Captain John!

Last week our group had a lovely time making their way at a leisurely pace along the Regent’s Canal from Angel to Camden, stopping off for lunch before heading home.

Tomorrow we have another group heading off to Little Venice, if you would like to join us in September give us a call!

Call Activities Manager Ellie Shipman on 0207 281 6018 to BOOK YOUR PLACE!

craft stall holloway fest

Our Get Together group at Whittington Park Community Association had a great time on Saturday at The Big Day Out in Whittington Park as part of the brilliant Holloway Festival.

The sun was shining and the atmosphere was vibrant as everyone enjoyed ice cream, music, dog shows, crafts, art, games and more. Our Get Together group, who meet at Whittington Park Community Association every Wednesday from 2 – 3.30pm gathered together their beautiful creations and set up their stall. We had some good sales, with the handmade toys proving popular as well as the cushions and baby clothes. All proceeds went back into the group to go towards more materials.

Everyone had a lovely time – so huge thanks to Katia from Whittington Park Community Association and Holloway Festival.

hosts event

Our voluntary Get Together hosts are a brilliant gang. A whole range of different backgrounds and ages, each individual is with us for a different reason but all with the same aim – to help us continue to reduce social isolation is Islington’s over 55s.

Our Get Together hosts meet and greet people at our Get Togethers, build brilliant and lasting relationships with our  clients and make new friends themselves. They get the chance to explore Islington, with trips on the Angel Boats, to wandering nature parks, trying experimental food, playing table tennis, cards and more!

Our clients really value our volunteer hosts, as they get to know them over the weeks, months and years of regular contact creating a very special Age UK Islington.

If you would like to find out more about volunteering with us call Activities Manager Ellie Shipman on 0207 281 6018.

On Saturday we had a great day out at the Here To event in partnership with Islington Giving and Lift – ‘Give Local’. It was a day to share volunteering opportunities with different organisations in the borough, so we ran a mini Get Together there to show people what we do.

We decided to explore local history through making ‘Local Postcards’. Using old photos of Islington, we cut out, cut up and remade our own versions of Cally Market (now Cally Park and residential housing), the 1920s Gaumont Theatre on Holloway Road (now the Odeon), The Savoy Theatre (now a Wetherspoons!) and much more.

With local people of all ages joining our group of people over 55 we had a lovely afternoon making new friends, partners and postcards and telling people all about our Get Togethers and how to get involved.

Have a look at our postcards and some of our helpers below!

If you are interested in volunteering in Islington or at one of our Get Togethers you can have a look on Here To’s website: www.islington.hereto.org or get in touch!

bingo arc

Wednesday saw another lovely afternoon Get Together at The Arc Centre in Angel. Our regulars put on Bingo and brought in homemade cakes to share with the group. It all got rather competitive and one lady won all three rounds! Everyone had a good natter and even signed up to the lunch at Pips Dish next week. Looking forward to introducing fellow Islingtonians together next Wednesday!

Are you a local person over 55? Come and join us at The Arc Centre next week from 2 – 4pm.
