We have been lucky enough to be granted another series of trips out on the Angel Boats this September. All aboard for more fun on the waterways – see London from a very different angle, meet new people and learn about the boat from Captain John!

Last week our group had a lovely time making their way at a leisurely pace along the Regent’s Canal from Angel to Camden, stopping off for lunch before heading home.

Tomorrow we have another group heading off to Little Venice, if you would like to join us in September give us a call!

On Monday we had the pleasure of being whisked off to St Paul’s Cathedral to hear a symphony orchestra and choir performing a War Requiem as part of the City of London Festival. With 10 free tickets snapped up, and free taxi rides to and from St Pauls, our group were excited and raring to go!

With a pre-concert introduction and Q&A with the performers, the concert was given another dimension and made more accessible to those who may not have experienced such a thing before.

The group had a fantastic time, and also really enjoyed visiting St Paul’s Cathedral, many of whom had not been since they were children, and were very impressed with the architecture and incredible sound.

So a huge thanks to Phillipa from City of London Festival, we are looking forward to next year already!

Yesterday our regular Monday Get Together (3.30 – 5pm) at Café Cucina 327 developed a new photography project with Peter Kyte from Urban Fotog.

Moving on from our exploration of the architecture and external environment around Cally Road, this session was all about us! Everyone was invited to bring along an object or item of personal significance to them and, using Peter’s mini lighting system, we documented and shared our stories around these objects with each other to print into postcards to sell at The Cally Fest this September.

From sepia postcards of Islington’s glamorous past, to a handmade silver ring, photos of one attendee’s Brazilian parents, to a funny stone pig kept safely in a sock, there was an array of eclectic and fascinating souvenirs from an equally eclectic and fascinating group of people!

It was a lovely afternoon of sharing stories over fantastic Italian coffee, and one which won’t be soon forgotten.

Join us at Cucina 327 next week for a chat and a cuppa, and share your stories!

Yesterday we were treated to a brilliant urban photography walk led by photographer Peter Kyte. We met at Café Cucina 327 for a delicious Italian coffee and mint tea before heading off with our cameras to observe the local area.

Briefed by Peter, we looked at pattern, colour and shape in the detail of our urban surroundings, using our zoom, macro settings, or simply our bodies to get closer to the subject to abstract it more.

With a range of abilities on board, the session was a great opportunity for those learning the basics of photography to others more experienced with a camera to explore Caledonian Road in all its urban glory.

A great day out!

Join us at Café Cucina 327 next Monday where we will be looking at the images we took and learning how to edit them. Or just pop in for a coffee! 3.30 – 5pm, Café Cucina 327 Caledonian Road, on the corner of Lyon Street. Bus Stop L, Caledonian Road and Barnsbury.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One of the results from our last walk around The Arc Centre.

On Friday we headed off to The British Museum to enjoy a fantastic afternoon of handling unusual, weird and wonderful musical instruments. From contemporary Maori-inspired Conch shell trumpets, to carved wooden flutes, simple yet satisfying rhythmic stones and African wire ‘pianos’; we played our melodic (and not so…) way through the session.

Exploring materials, textures, sounds and shapes we were spoken through the inspiration, myth and legend behind the instruments by Harvinder and her brilliant colleagues from The British Museum’s Community Partnerships team.

We then headed up into the ‘Living and Dying’ exhibition space to see other similar exhibits to what we had been handling moments before. The opportunity to touch, smell and play the instruments really brought to life the objects behind the glass – and subsequently provided an informative and vivid glimpse into the lives and cultures of those who invented and played them.

Thank you British Museum!

Our Get Together group at Whittington Park Community Association had a great time on Saturday at The Big Day Out in Whittington Park as part of the brilliant Holloway Festival.

The sun was shining and the atmosphere was vibrant as everyone enjoyed ice cream, music, dog shows, crafts, art, games and more. Our Get Together group, who meet at Whittington Park Community Association every Wednesday from 2 – 3.30pm gathered together their beautiful creations and set up their stall. We had some good sales, with the handmade toys proving popular as well as the cushions and baby clothes. All proceeds went back into the group to go towards more materials.

Everyone had a lovely time – so huge thanks to Katia from Whittington Park Community Association and Holloway Festival.

On Saturday we had a great day out at the Here To event in partnership with Islington Giving and Lift – ‘Give Local’. It was a day to share volunteering opportunities with different organisations in the borough, so we ran a mini Get Together there to show people what we do.

We decided to explore local history through making ‘Local Postcards’. Using old photos of Islington, we cut out, cut up and remade our own versions of Cally Market (now Cally Park and residential housing), the 1920s Gaumont Theatre on Holloway Road (now the Odeon), The Savoy Theatre (now a Wetherspoons!) and much more.

With local people of all ages joining our group of people over 55 we had a lovely afternoon making new friends, partners and postcards and telling people all about our Get Togethers and how to get involved.

Have a look at our postcards and some of our helpers below!

If you are interested in volunteering in Islington or at one of our Get Togethers you can have a look on Here To’s website: www.islington.hereto.org or get in touch!
