This weekend we were joined again by Mildmay Park residents at King Henry’s Walk Garden for a special talk about pond life from one of the ‘Friends of the Garden’ Pete.

Angi and her husband Steve brought the talk alive by handing out identification cards of pond life as well as photos and some real specimens scooped out of the pond just moments before!

We were all able to get a good look at the newts, water snails and water boatmen as well as some plant species at Pete told us about the habitat of a pond and shared some tips on how to make one (it has to have sloping side for newts and other amphibians to get out onto the land – otherwise they drown!). There is much more to it than digging a hole and filling it with tap water!

We also got the chance to see the Islington Giving container coming along nicely, with herds, onions, garlic and pansies growing well. Everyone took home a little bit of mint for a warming mint tea. Yum!

We were met by Helen, Camley Street’s Education Officer, who gave us an introduction (after an essential cup of tea!)¬†and insight into the history of the park and then lead us on a lovely tour around the reserve.

Nestled between the churning regeneration works in King’s Cross and the Regents Canal¬†Camley Street Nature Park is an oasis of wild greenery – proudly home to some rare bird and plant species.

We wandered at a leisurley pace around several ponds surrounded by fluffy bullrushes and whistling reeds, whilst ducks paddled on the surface and the tweets of the birds miraculoulsy drowned out the industrial cranes in the background.

It was a lovely afternoon and felt like a little holiday out of the city. Join us next time for your escape!
