On Monday we welcomed Toby from the North London Waste Authority to our longest running Get Together at The Duke of Cambridge to speak about how to waste less food and save more money as part of the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign.

It was another brilliant talk, really opening our eyes to the facts and figures around food waste – such as 37 million slices of bread being thrown away by UK households every day!

We guessed at best portion sizes, using the helpful measuring cups and spaghetti measurers Toby provided, as well as sharing our own advise on how to store fresh food and tell when something is going off.

It was a great afternoon, and we all learnt something new!

Thank you Toby!

Join us at more interesting talks, or just pop in for a cuppa and a chat! We meet at The Duke of Cambridge pub, 33 St Peters St, Angel, every Monday (except Bank Hols) from 12 – 2pm.

Call Activities Manager Ellie Shipman for more information on 0207 281 6018.

See you there!

These tours are free and open for all – s0 join us this Thursday at 10.30am (meet at Meeting Point 2 near the Information Desk in the main foyer) for an 11.00 tour (in the Japan Gallery, Level 5, Room 92). No booking necessary, but do call us for more information on 0207 281 6018.

See more information about the beautiful Japanese galleries here.

Yesterday we were joined at The Arc Centre by Gemma from Wise Up To Waste at The North London Waste Authority to share some helpful tips and insights into how we can waste less food and save more money.

Some great tips and facts included:

– You can freeze all sorts of food – from yoghurt, to eggs (not whole though!) to making your own frozen banana ice lollies! (One of our group popped home to prove it – bringing back a pot of frozen grapes to share!)
– Don’t shop when you’re hungry!
– Go by the best before dates but also use your own intuition
– 74% of cereal is thrown away because too much has been poured!

The talk provided a great platform for some heated debate amongst the group, from discussions around supermarkets to organic veg to packaging – everyone had something to contribute and their own reasons for their food habits.

We were also shown portion measurers, and given some free recipes with advice on using up leftovers.

It was an informative and insightful afternoon, and we all came away having learnt something new.

Thank you Gemma and the North London Waste Authority!

Yesterday our regular Monday Get Together (3.30 – 5pm) at Café Cucina 327 developed a new photography project with Peter Kyte from Urban Fotog.

Moving on from our exploration of the architecture and external environment around Cally Road, this session was all about us! Everyone was invited to bring along an object or item of personal significance to them and, using Peter’s mini lighting system, we documented and shared our stories around these objects with each other to print into postcards to sell at The Cally Fest this September.

From sepia postcards of Islington’s glamorous past, to a handmade silver ring, photos of one attendee’s Brazilian parents, to a funny stone pig kept safely in a sock, there was an array of eclectic and fascinating souvenirs from an equally eclectic and fascinating group of people!

It was a lovely afternoon of sharing stories over fantastic Italian coffee, and one which won’t be soon forgotten.

Join us at Cucina 327 next week for a chat and a cuppa, and share your stories!
